LE REPOS DU GUERRIER

Sorry for the very long silence but have been busy, working on our IAFL album, and changing a little bit my 'web presence' (hold on... some one is doing almost everything for me there...

there is NOW a facebook page (and having got rid of a fake one), there is still one. the real one is here. all infos abot dates are there but do not expect a lot of socializing,

the main news is the website ivansmagghe.com which should relay all the blogs, info etc... there will be also a 'current affairs' section that will reflect my mood of the day, charts, whatever... It is still being polished so be indulgent.

Track of the day is already a favorite of the very close 'latete_atoto' dj duo who know than playing good records unmixed is a 100000000 times better than mixing boring house. and it is obviously dedicated to Keith and Jonnie.

just made intro and end playable really. GOOD TO BE BACK...

NOW AND NEXT...

Last Sunday, the French People elected a 'left-wing' president for the first time in seventeen years.

There is a lot behind my use of these '' but I won't dwell on it here. 'Le Changement' brings hopes, and if we all know that these may be quickly shattered, let's just enjoy the rare moment and realize that, all future dangers considered, the 'Other' is gone and dusted.

Kill The DJ has never hidden its political commitments and it has to be noted that our party on the Saturday before voting day was our busiest ever, to the point of taking real musical liberties.

After that, well, is after that...

There was quite a few rainbow and red flags on the Place de la Bastille, and even if La Marseillaise was compulsory, We consider this one also sung in our hearts and minds...

ROUTE 66-FIRST STAGE

I had been postponing for god knows what reason the moment of dabbling with a band that has been a constant inspiration since 1995.

Inspiring because true, sincere even in their lackluster moments (a few), blinding in their moments of brilliance (more than a few). Inspiring, let us not forget our vanity, also because so underrated (but by Stephane and Jerome from Rough Trade Paris, but they were guys who considered Big Flame or Terminal Cheesecake as 'the best bands in the world).

Listening to their whole discography, I am sure I will come back for more very very soon but this has to be a firm fave (not solely of mine, James Holden writing me back instantly-quote-oooooh, what was it?-unquote.

sequence remember

Small flashback on this here blog (have a dig in the early entries for the instrumental) but my long time partner Fany reminded me recently how much we were fan when we were doing 'TEST' on Radio Nova (late 90's) of the other ingredient of this...yes...mash up.

But don't worry, the puree is black beans and squid ink. A dark brooding violence that fits the dark days France is living at the moment and the ever necessity to keep the flame of anger alive.

A FEW THINGS FROM... I-CUBE

I have been waiting for a while to get one of the 'edit kings' on here. I-cube does not need introduction, not to you at least. Our trajectories have crossed many times (from Radio Nova to now), our taste have collided (a comparative graph-x=time, y=intensity of our love of new wave, cheese pop disco and psychedelia could be surprising)... Up to the point where we both dug out the same track to chop very recently. Hmmmm...

But what I love above all about MR Cube is his 'serious non-seriousness' about music. You'll decipher.

His (bonkers) album M MEGAMIX will be out on may the 7th on Versatile. More info here.

In the meantime, from the vaults (you'd love to have the key, believe me):

WHIP IT (I-CUBE MIN EDIT)

GOUINE COMME UN CAMION

It may be quite hard to fathom the importance of the 'Gay Pride' in France for the average liberal english youth. The lack of a proper demonstration on these shores is another debate (does the acceptance of 'camp' means the abandon of political struggle? Is there a latent 'light' homophobia under fashionista acceptance? Is it ok 'as long as they don't get into graphic details etc...).

But in France, the Gay Pride is a real event. Or has been. Recently, it has been submitted to a few blows: they can not use the actual term (some jerk copyrighted it) and now goes under the name 'Marche des Fiertes' (which in French, sorry, could also be the appelation for a right-wing veteran march), its political aspect is drowned in tacky muscle mary cheese house, male gay conformism, chapelwars, minorities inside the minority (all the transgender rainbow stars that doe not fit in the classic box: drag-kings, lesbian transexuals etc...).

Since my days at Pulp, my best friends, my parisian family has been mainly composed of homosexual girls, and I would not change it for all the gold in the world. I am a 'classic' (with a few twists) heterosexual but has always been 100% supportive of their militancy. Always will be I think.

This year, my crew is planning to take part in the float under the 'GOUINE COMME UN CAMION' banner. This may need a bit of franco-english linguistics. In french, and usually in a macho way, one says 'belle comme un camion' for a girl: 'beautiful as a truck'. But butch lesbians are aslo commonly known as 'cammioneuses': truckers. Good slogan I'd say.

But a float cost a lot, more than 4000 euros actually. hence the GOUINATHON' (from 'gouine', dyke in french, and 'telethon') you can chip in to actually see it happen. You don't have to be french, and it may give idea to the new responsibles for the London Pride (including a major nightlife promoter that may be the one to relight the fire), this is an international struggle.

You can watch pictures, movies and learn a bit more about the 'Gouine comme un Camion' manifesto, and contribute here.

there is also a great video here...

Of course, there is a reward. Well, you can download the track without giving anything to this project but I'd be very grateful to those who will actively participate.

About the track, it is rough as 0+0 can only be but also has that unique sense of humor that breeds in the contempt of 'les bien-pensants', whoever they are.

CALIFORNIA CHIP

Picture with no relation to track but did not have my usual folder with me when posting. I've promised myself not to postpone things anymore you see...

Here's one my favorite edit I've done for ages. I-cube did his own take on it for his brilliant Edits du Golem but, in this case, I think the town is big enough for both guns.

My pleasure is not in technicality (it almost never is but this is a fairly simple cut and paste job). It's in the electronic balearic tease, the artificial sunshine lick (oh, the tat pops back) before the 'west cold' vocal comes in. Proper electronic pop from a band we will come back to in the near future...

A FEW THING FROM...PATRICE BAUMEL

After all these years, it takes quite a lot from a club to impress me and when asked about my favorite clubs, I sometimes wish I was a one-armed hillbilly not too good with chopping wood.

TROUW in Amsterdam (a city that had proven very disappointing since my early memories of Dimitri at the Roxy-who is actually resident for special all-nighters, and still ahs the magic from what I've heard, at the above mentioned place.

Not only the club itself is amazing, located in an old printing factory but they sometimes move the one of the floor to the best room I've played in ages. Dark as the pit of hell, clever minimal lighting, rough and ready like an east german garage circa 1993. The vibe. Where Black Magic is the religion de rigueur. Not to mention the now ditched performance night where I saw Jesus covered in shit and candles in the wrong candelabra.

Patrice Baumel is one of the residents at Trouw. And has been a firmn favorite producer of mine. Him and Nuno Santos play without concession a mix of shoegaze, lo-fi trance and strange disco. Patrice even control the brilliant visuals at the same time. Pretty cool. And, hey, he makes loads of edits. You can find them here for nada.

I picked this one out of nostalgia though I hate the word.

LIE TO ME (PATRICE BAUMEL EDIT)

A few words from a dj that you'd be well worth checking out closely (he is a huge fan of M83, that should be enough in one's book).

who is your forgotten hero?
Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards.

what motto is painted on your fighter plane?
"Too old to die young"

what makes you really angry?
People who put the Nutella in the fridge.

and your last words?

THE JUNKYARD IS REOPEN!!!!!

The sound has been turned on again. And I'm, this time, leaving the amps plugged in, overdrive being a danger we all can cope with.

There was many reasons to this long silence, reasons I do not really want to dwell in but I've managed to amass tons of giveaways. Lost time was not time lost.

We will come back to the Robert Johnson book (including a 20 pages talk between Lord Weatherall and myself), a freeload of edits from the 'A Few Things From IS' second cd (for those who did not get it), our support for the 'Gouines Comme un Camion' cause (????), special edits of the early Pulp days, a TSUGI original hour mix, collaborations with GET A ROOM!, new IAFL stuff etc...

For now, and once in a while, a pop up 12" may appear. Meaning 4 tracks with a theme, split up in 4 downloads, with an original sleeve to be printed with the last of the edits.

I've been wanting for a while to give my own take on the 'nu-old house' revival (from xxx to yyy, blah blah, you don't need me...). So here's the first of these TRANSMISSIONS OF THE WHEELCHAIR. These are on going works but I'll let you know of newer versions.

Edits will now be posted in WAV or AIFF too... When you've been away from home, you need to bring back presents for all non? In other words, check this here place more than I've been, it may be worth it.

l'avenir dure longtemps.

TRACK NOW AVAILABLE

l'avenir dure longtemps.

A beautiful french phrase coined, I think by Louis aLthusser, roughly translable by 'what comes ahead will last a long time. But does not do it justice and defo not a good tattoo like here...

We are still deep in grieving following the death of Joel. We can't begin to tell
you how much we miss him.

But I've always gone back to work in the dark hours... so...

This is an easy one as the original was reminded to me by my friend Geoffroy from brussels whom I'll play with next week. I've just tweaked it to make it more playable. all is in there.

Some may say it shows my dark side but am not that sure...

For Joel Dever

I recently ended caught, through Rodrigo Fresan or Juan Rulfo, by the Langage International des Morts and the existence of ghosts. This morning, these have become a boil, a crave coming from my deepest insides. The death of someone you know is hard to fathom, but what of the death of a close friend? Heidegger said (my words) that it puts a filter on reality, cutting you from the world where people react normally. There not there. Behind a blurred glass, blurred but very hard to break.

I saw Joel grow up from a shy keyboard player to a 'cocky' Dalstonite (God, I'd never thought I'd miss those dirty baggy green tracksuit). A child becoming an adult and God knows how difficult this can be. Actually, I felt closer to him, him born the year I was hit by C-86 than to 90% of the so-called adults I meet.
Yes, we had our fair shares of squabbles, about his teenage selfishness, a certain laziness... But believe me, I've had much bigger fights with much smaller people.

Joel was a talented musician, composer and half of Battant, whose second album, As I Ride with no Horse, was and will be to be released next month.
He also was my Chloe's best friend, they shared more than the band: a 'right attitude' if there is one and certainly the right sense of humor. She has lost a part of herself here, a part than even I can fill. I'll try as hard as I can though.

There aren't much point in finding out why it happened, it won't bring him back. I just know that the perspective of acceding success and happiness can be scary thing when you' ve wrongly felt worthless for years. And he was bound for it, he would have realized that success is only being proud of what you do. Nowt else.

Tears mixed with anger are running in this house tonight. But, once again, a one-legged horse will raise from his ashes, and we'll name him J.

FOR JOEL (I WISH I COULD EDIT MY TEARS)

All these equine thoughts (and a poem here) go to my love Chloe, Kristina, Anna, Aaron, Thom, Zoe, Fany, Steph and all who knew who Joel really was.

more music soon but...

I will post some new music very soon. I am slowly getting back to work after some real holidays. Here's a few words from one of my... side projects.

This is front page news, Scandal of the Century!!!

After years of retrograde thinking, Discipline in Disorder now has...

A TWITTER ACCOUNT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is Twitter so the length of everything is limited, our account is : DisciplineFeed

find it here: http://twitter.com/#!/DisciplineFeed

You are not dreaming.

It will not be used for gossips and notes on personal hygiene but as its opening 'tweet' (this feels wrong but we will get used to it) states, DisciplineFeed will provide a ' everyday feed of oddities, underdogs and classics, torn pages, lost celluloid and more'.

This will be an instant, and less intimidating, for our tracing bullets. Expect to get something to read, watch, or admire everyday (if not every hour).

a few things from... Rebolledo

There are people you know you were gonna get along with even before actually meeting them. It happens even to old grumpies like myself. I am rarely mistaken and certainly was not
when I drank and danced (yes) a good part of a corsican night, feet in the sand, with Mauricio Rebolledo.

No need to introduce our mexican kindred spirit who alongside Daniel Maloso has made some of the best recent staplers in my box. Expect more from him on Comeme and some special collaboration with our beloved blondie from Koln, Superpitcher (including an amazing hilarious track called 'Speedo & Boots'-Don't ask).

It's a pleasure to have him here and I've been missing his laughter since this brief but intense encounter.

The man graces us with an unreleased edit of... well you'll know...

BITCH SOT (REBOLLEDIT)

And, I wish you could hear the heat in his voice, a few words:

Your forgotten hero?

My ten years older Brother... "El Moro". He used to be a Motocross rider and for me as a kid this was a total flash... My perfect weekend back then was to travell with him to the next town where the races were... because of an injury, he had to retire and switched to car racing, but at this time I was not an often follower any more... now he´s having a break from racetracks... and I´m not so flashed about him any more... Kind of Sad... Still a cool guy dough.

The motto painted on your fighter plane?

"You´re messing with the wrong Mexican"

What makes you really angry?

People without manners.

Your last words on your deathbed?

"Hey you know what? mmm... Never mind..."

WORTHY DIGGERS PART 2: Mr C.C.

here's the second reedit born out of your brilliant obtuse minds. A totally different atmosphere, period and rework (less reconstruction, more beat addition-but still simplicity) than yesterday. some of you may be familiar with the original but I still found the band a bit underrated.

WORTHY DIGGERS PART 1: shake sauvage

Here are the first edits emerging from the CD competition.

To put back in context, I ask followers of this blog to send me a track that they thought I should reedit. I picked up 7 out of... quite a lot.

They will not appear in 'quality order' but, as ever, according to my fickle 'gout du jour'.... they are from all styles (the really obscure to the obvious but missed) and proof that there are very very worthy diggers out there...

and let's start with : Shake Sauvage, who pointed me towards much more to this total masterpiece...

A few words about this treasure hunter (why would this be limited to 'famous' collectors???):

- introduce yourself in one line

-------------------------------------

- a book we should read ?

not a book to read but a movie to watch: '49th parallel' by michael powell (1941)

- favorite 'obvious but forgotten' cheesy record ?

not sure it fits in the category, but supertramp's self-titled debut (1970) first came to mind

- an idea worth fighting for

fighting? how do you do that?

-and a 5 records playlist?

autopilot - love is a process (1979)
barn owl - shadowland (2011)
gigi - maintenant (2009)
münchen - chaquiego (2010)
francesco tristano & moritz von oswald - auricle / bio / on (2008)

As for the record pointed out by Shake Sauvage, it is one of the best finds I've bumped into for ages, even better surely for those of you who speak Serb. I just did a bit of re-ordering, not much, a record entitled Between Two Drops of Sweat (How good is that for a title?) deserved as much respect as I'm able to have.

Brilliant lost gem. A massive thanks to Mr Sauvage then... More to come...

BETWEEN TWO DROPS OF SWEAT (IS TRANSLATION)
